Christmas or Nearly New Years Cake!

Well I hope everyone is having a lovely Christmas and looking forward to 2012! I have been enjoying the festivities so much that I forgot to share my Christmas cake recipe. But since it's not a traditional Christmas cake, and you could really use it for any occasion,  I've decided its not too late to share!

So if you are thinking of making a New Years cake this could be just  the one for you!

A Mary Berry Christmas!

I love Christmas, and this year I'm even more excited than ever as I have already gotten the best gift ever. Something I have always, not my lovely new bike, but... my very own husband! Yes it is my first Christmas as a wife and I'm so happy that I've been decorating every inch of our home with festive stuff while trying my best to sing Christmas carols in tune.

Chocolate Birthday Cake

This is the most delicious chocolate cake you could ever  possibly imagine. It's sooooo rich and tastes so good. I made it for the first time last year for my brother-in-law's birthday, and it was such a hit that I've made it for nearly every special person's birthday since then!

As it was my lovely sister's  birthday last week I thought I'd make it for her, she appreciates chocolate. And yes, I did give her the lovely skirt as a present - but really that was me inflicting my homemade fashion experiments on her, so I  also had to give her something I knew she'd like. And chocolate cake works every time.

Skirt Update

I did it! Over a year after I first started putting it together I have finally completed my second skirt! And I finished it on time to give to Emer for her birthday. Woohoo!

So, since my last post about this skirt I had a good bit of re-jigging to do. I already had the bones of it done but really needed some guidance to finish it off. I always knew my Mam could sew, so I called over with the skirt to see if she could work some magic on it. First of all she examined it closely and  told me I had done a good job so far. Which I was very pleased with. Then, when I told her I was finishing it so I could give it to Emer for a birthday present she almost had a heart attack. Seems my "good job" was acceptable for me to wear out in public but not to give away as an actual present.

Emma's Royal Lemon Meringue Pie

Mmmm Lemon Meringue Pie! I always liked the sound of it and the look of it, but because there is no chocolate on it or in it I would never choose it from a desert menu. And so I never actually had a slice during my twenty something years on this earth. That was until April 29th 2011. Yes I remember that date for being the day I had my first slice of Lemon Meringue Pie. There was also a wedding going on that day too.

I love the whole idea of sewing, being able to make something that you can wear or use just by cutting some material and stitching it together.  A few years ago I taught myself how to sew with a needle and thread, it was out of necessity as I kept loosing buttons and just wanted to be able to replace them. Once I had accomplished that I knew my next step was the sewing machine!

Lovely Vegetable Soup

I love soup. It is one of the handiest things ever to make. I know there is a bit of preparation in washing and chopping the ingredients, but other than that it is just so simple. And you end up with a great big pot of soup which lasts for ages! I particulalry like vegetable soup as you can throw in whatever you want really (providing its a vegetable!). It's also an instant dose of goodness, so I'm sure you get to tick off a few of your 5-a-day by eating a bowl of this stuff!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

I always thought the idea of peanut butter was just wrong. I didn't like the look of it and when I tasted it I came to the conclusion that it was just a horrible weird salt and sugar paste, with  a hint of peanuts.

Years later I decided to give it another go. I realised what went wrong the first time was that I had eaten  one of the big brand type peanut butter spreads that was full of sweeteners and bad stuff. However  the second time round I tried the healthier version.  I got natural  peanut butter made from ...100% peanuts of all things! And it tasted really good, I was instantly converted!

Dorothy update!

So I have been inundated with requests for updates on my lovely new bike!

Okay, well maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but at least four people have enquired about it so I thought an update was in order! First of all she has officially been christened Dorothy. And secondly, well there's not much news apart from that!

Lovely Celebration Lemon Layer Cake

My lovely parents recently celebrated a whopping 35 years of married life together! Ahhh, I think they are the cutest couple ever! So in honour of their special celebration I decided to make a cake!

I usually never need to give the cake flavour a second thought - I always go for chocolate - but because this one wasn't for me, and because my Mam isn't really a fan of all the chocolate things I make, I asked the two of them what flavour  they would like. In the end we all agreed on lemon. That may have been the only other option I gave them but sure they were still happy with it!

Happy Halloween!!!

I had planned to get all festive for Halloween and bake something pumpkiny to eat while I watch some scary(ish) films later on, and maybe even share them with trick-or-treaters. So... I decided on pumpkin cupcakes. I know cupcakes are a reoccurring feature at the moment - but I just love them - they are delicious and look way nicer than muffins or any other baked goods without icing on top!

Cupcakes for a good cause

I'm sure you all know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Well my little sister Anne-Marie, who is a primary school teacher, asked me to make some pink cupcakes for her school who were  having a pink-themed fund raising day with proceeds going to the Irish Cancer Society and the Marie Keating Foundation. So of course I was delighted to make cupcakes for such an important cause.

Mushroom Soup

I made mushroom soup from scratch and it actually turned out surprisingly tasty which is why I am going to share the details. I love mushroom soup and had made it before by following a recipe from  an old  Home Economics school book. (Not my book; I never did Home Ec although maybe I should have as I now have a slightly delayed curiosity for the subject!)  Anyhow this is the first time I went without a book and tried to just recall the basic ingredients and make the rest up myself. That's why I was slightly surprised at how nice the finished product tasted! So if you fancy trying to make my mushroom concoction, read on.....

Lovely New Bike!

Okay, so you can see I didn't make or bake this lovely thing but I am the proud new owner of it! Ah I'm so happy! I feel like all my birthdays & Christmases have come at once! Although really it's just this Christmas & my birthday (which isn't until New Years) that have come early - so this is the best present ever!

I have wanted a bicycle for quite a while. The last one I got was for my eleventh birthday and it seemed to last forever. Good thing I never grew any taller. (I was a tall eleven year old!) Anyway it was only when I went looking for the bike a few years ago in my parents shed that they broke the news to me; my dad had thrown it out along with an old lawnmower!

A Lovely Noticeboard!

Well hello there, hope you are all having a lovely week. I decided a few days ago that for this weeks creation I needed to make something lovely - but practical! As I just finished writing another one of my many to-do lists and began to search for some blue-tack to stick it somewhere, I got an epiphany: I would make a noticeboard!

They really are just the handiest things ever! Of course I wasn't planning on making it from scratch with cork and all that, no I would just buy one of those old plain looking things and make it look lovely! I remembered seeing something similar done in a book before.

Hello World and Welcome to my Blog!

I love to make and bake lovely things and so I thought a blog would be a great way to share my creations. I want to challenge myself to make or bake something new every week and record my results. I suppose it is also a little mission to expand my range of recipes and force myself to learn something new and lovely every week.

So, here goes my first blogging baking creation!

Although I have to admit this isn't a new one; I have baked these lovely things before...but just to get me started in the blogosphere I baked them again today, and so... I give you the loveliest of things: vanilla cupcakes!
